They should be building Corvette into a standalone brand, with various models, by now.
Corvette would basically need 6 models to be a valid brand:
A classic FR model, called the Stingray, basically an evolution of the current car.
The much anticipated MR Corvette Zora, capable of taking the fight to the best supercars in the world, and offer a comparable purebred experience.
A mid range sports car based on the Camaro, more refined and athletic than its Chevrolet brother. Corvette Sentinel sounds pretty good.
An entry level sports car, inspired by the Chevrolet Code/Tru concepts.
A CLS like, swoopy sports sedan, you know, for the added practicability.
And a crossover, to rival similar offerings from Porsche and Maserati.
Corvette should rival Porsche. Cadillac should rival Audi. GMC should rival Jeep.
Come on GM, build brands. Powerful, desirable brands sell cars better than expensive marketing campaigns and greedy, dishonest dealers.

That would cannibalize sales from other GM brands. You know, the same problem that plagued old GM.
Corvette is doing just fine anyways.

Didn’t work out too well for Chrysler.
And GM already has enough sales cannibalization as mentioned by that one guy.

That’s because Chrysler never put the required time, resources and strategy into the Viper or SRT brand projects.
Also, they never intended SRT to be a Porsche rival, like I imagine a Corvette brand would be. But rather a poor man’s AMG, doing mostly tuning jobs for regular Dodge and Chrysler models.

No it wouldn’t. It would be centered on focused sports cars, something GM isn’t really offering in large quantities right now(except maybe for Cadillac V’s to some extent, but Cadillac doesn’t and won’t have the freedom in design and technology, a Corvette brand would have, because it still needs to get luxury car buyers in).
If you wanna talk about cannibalization, you need to look at Chevrolet/GMC. I have a plan for that too, but GM won’t do anything with that brand, except for adding more shit and chrome to Chevrolet trucks, and sell them for double the initial price.

Say what? GM has plenty of performance cars. Corvette, Camaro, V series, SS sedan.

I already mentioned the V-Series. Great cars, but they will always have certain limitations, dictated by the cars they’re based on, And I don’t think, despite all their qualities, that they are cross shopped with purer sports cars all that much.
The Corvette Stingray is dragged down by its association with Chevrolet, and it can achieve a lot more as part of a Corvette brand(that’s what this whole post is all about). The Zora would be an awesome addition to the family,
The SS is a one night stand of a car. Fun, loud, ruthless, but won’t last too long. It will be phased out, once Holden’s Australian production ends. The Corvette branded sedan I’ve mentioned earlier would fill that gap, even if it would be more advanced, precise and sexy(SS looks a bit like a cougar(not the Mercury, obviously).
The Chevrolet Camaro and the Corvette Sentinel, as I called it, would share some pieces of the Alpha platform, but instead of competing against the Camaro and the ATS coupe, it would complete the circle, by having a different personality(Camaro= brutal muscle car, ATS= sophisticated performance, Sentinel= balanced athleticism).
The entry level sports car would be in its own space, without any internal competition.
And as for the sports crossover, that space is free too. I don’t think that GM offers a crossover that can even come close to a Porsche Cayenne or Macan in driving dynamics and performance feeling, let alone sporty looks. That will be the job of the Corvette crossovor,

You want 20 variants that all look the same like Porsche 911 & Ford Mustang does? Porsche made the Cayman; highly desirable and still has it below even their modest 911 variants while charging the same if not more MSRP. You think Chevrolet wouldn’t do the same?
Considering the small sphere the US carmakers are holding onto, I’d have them stick to what they are doing for now.

I doubt GM would mind having a cash cow like Porsche.
Also, the whole point of spinning off Corvette from Chevrolet is to open new horizons for GM’S performance divisions.
It would allow the brand to gain more street, track and golf club, creed, both in the US and in places where Chevrolet is either entry level(places that get even more poorly made Chevys than America(emerging markets)or where it failed and left(EU).

That was probably a case they were considering a while back (years ago?). Last I read, car companies were moving to some different ventures. Some major ones that conflict with original projections for cars and future brands. Even with the continued success Chevrolet has motorsports wise and even with the Corvette, I don’t think they can do the transition you propose.

I agree. GM needs a sports car brand now that the new corvette and new camaro are successful. The new vette is competing with brands such as Ferrari, Jaguar, and McLaren. Meanwhile, it looks as though the Camaro is doing double duty. Not only is the Camaro competing with its old rivals liek the Challenger and Mustang, but many auto journalist are putting it up against BMW’s 3 series and even Porsche.
Surf the internet and you’ll see more blogs or Youtube videos in Europe about the Corvette and Camaro and many Europeans praising both cars. They want these cars over in Europe. I think GM should launch an SS brand since both the Camaro and Corvette at one time have worn the SS badge.
And maybe then even bring back an all new Corvair since it was a rear engine car and it too wore the SS badge.
It looks as though Chevy is going in the same direction that Cadillac did as far as as who they want to compete with and use as a benchmark. And it looks like their done playing with Ford and Dodge and want a bigger piece of the pie.
